Writing with Writers: Advice for creating an anthology

by Melissa Henderson

Writers are often known for unique personalities, quirky traits, inquisitive minds, and the ability to find a story in any situation. When one person creates a work of writing, a new experience can be experienced by others. When a group of writers works together on a project, the opportunity for fellowship, sharing faith, and creating friendships can bring joy, laughter, and sometimes tears.

What happens when you are writing with other writers?

In 2022, one of the writer’s groups I belong to tossed around the idea of writing an anthology. The ACFW(American Christian Fiction Writers) South Carolina Lowcountry chapter was created a few years ago. We’re a growing chapter and enjoy a variety of writings by each member. Some members are published authors and others are on the road to possible publication.

Genres represented by our chapter members include inspirational romance, Christian mystery and suspense, poetry, children’s stories, and more. Some people write blog posts, devotions and articles. Others write novellas and full length books. Each person is uniquely gifted by God.

Our meetings begin with prayer and we enjoy sharing His message with others.

When the idea for an anthology was presented by one of the group members, smiles and words of encouragement began filling the room. Time for discussion about the anthology was added to the next meeting.

For several months, we continued with the regular schedule of events. A speaker presented a topic and then we discussed joys and concerns about life and writing. Towards the closing of each meeting, the group began formulating different ideas for an anthology.

Questions were asked. “Should we write about the same topic?” “What if two or more people write the same kind of story?” “What is the word count?” “Will we self-publish or try to get traditionally published?”

As inquiries continued, the excitement built. In a short time, eight authors agreed to contribute to the anthology. After more discussion, we decided to base the stories on the Charleston Light lighthouse on Sullivan’s Island in South Carolina.

Our chapter meets in Mount Pleasant, SC and several members know the Sullivan’s Island area. With all great stories, there is a need for research. That meant a “field trip." Picture the authors touring Fort Moultrie in the heat, climbing barracks, and looking inside antique buildings to gain more inspiration for the book. Laughter, foot sores from sticker bushes, and inspiration were all part of the exploration of the area.

The lighthouse we chose is not operational and is known to be quite ugly. We believe the Lord put the idea into our minds to use this particular lighthouse as a beacon of light and hope.

As months passed, and we shared the progress of each story, we could feel God’s hand in the message of the book. A sad-looking lighthouse could inspire and encourage others.

A local television show learned about the book and requested interviews with the group. As we worked together, each person wanted to do something special with the proceeds from the sales of the book.

One of our members had created a non-profit organization for mothers in need. We prayed and decided all proceeds from the book would be given to SOUL (Sanctuary of Unborn Life). Once again, God was working on the details.

When the book was edited and completed, the publication came through Random Moon Books. The authors of the anthology have given a presentation at The Moveable Feast on Pawleys Island. We’ve been able to share the writing process and results with other writers.

The book is published and available at different popular retailers. “Charleston Light: Stories Inspired by Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse” is a work of dedication and love. From sweet romance to time travel to older adults finding love, to a retelling of a fairy tale, each author created something unique.

If you're thinking of writing or publishing an anthology, there are some things to consider.

Pray first.

Seek His wisdom and ask for His guidance.

Different personalities can sometimes work together and other times, have conflict. Remember to work

together to share His message with others.

Does this mean that every writer's group should attempt to produce an anthology? No. This is a personal example of how working with other writers can advance our writing technique, share the love of God, and bring the chapter members closer together. Through the process of creating the idea, writing the stories, editing each page, deciding on the clip art, and giving honest opinions, we found closeness and strengthened the bond of the group.

One of the most wonderful parts of the process of writing an anthology is knowing that God was with us in every step. When we place God first, our intentions will be humble and honest.

On another note, the book is an AWSA Golden Scroll 2023 finalist. To God be the glory!

Have you contributed to an anthology? What was your experience?
